Revolutionising the Trenchless Industry: Empowering New Professionals
The trenchless technology sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with innovative initiatives aimed at nurturing fresh talent and bridging the skills gap. As the industry faces challenges related to an ageing workforce and evolving technological demands, there’s a pressing need to invigorate and support professionals new to the field. This article delves into the efforts being made to cultivate the next generation of trenchless experts, exploring the various programmes, networks, and opportunities available for those embarking on a career in this dynamic sector.
The trenchless industry, encompassing a wide range of technologies for underground infrastructure installation, inspection, maintenance, and rehabilitation, is witnessing a surge in demand for skilled professionals. With urban development accelerating and the need for sustainable infrastructure solutions growing, the importance of trenchless methods cannot be overstated. However, the sector faces a critical juncture, with a significant portion of its workforce approaching retirement age and a noticeable shortage of talent to fill the void.
The Growing Demand for Trenchless Expertise
The global push towards sustainable urban development and the need for efficient infrastructure maintenance have catapulted trenchless technologies into the spotlight. Cities worldwide are seeking ways to upgrade their underground networks with minimal disruption to daily life, making trenchless methods increasingly attractive. This surge in demand has created a wealth of opportunities for professionals in the field, from engineers and technicians to project managers and innovators.
However, the rapid growth of the sector has also exposed a significant shortage of skilled workers. Many companies report difficulties in finding qualified personnel to fill key positions, potentially hampering project timelines and innovation. This skills gap threatens to slow the industry’s progress at a time when its services are most needed.
Introducing the UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network
In a groundbreaking move to address the challenges facing the trenchless technology sector, the UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) has unveiled an innovative initiative aimed at nurturing and supporting professionals new to the industry. The “UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network” represents a significant step forward in the organisation’s commitment to fostering the next generation of trenchless experts and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the field.
The conception of the UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network stems from a recognition of the pressing need to engage and support individuals who are new to the trenchless sector, regardless of their age or background. With the industry facing a skills gap and an ageing workforce, this initiative seeks to invigorate the sector by creating a supportive ecosystem for newcomers.
The network’s primary goal is multifaceted: to enhance understanding of trenchless technologies among new professionals, foster a connected community within the industry, and increase awareness of learning opportunities. By focusing on these key areas, the UKSTT aims to equip the next generation of trenchless professionals with the knowledge, skills, and connections necessary to tackle the complex challenges that lie ahead.
A Platform for Growth and Connection
At its core, the UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network is designed to be a dynamic platform that facilitates learning, networking, and professional development. The initiative recognises that those new to the industry often face unique challenges in navigating the complexities of trenchless technologies and finding their place within the sector.
To address these needs, the network will offer a range of resources and opportunities, including:
• Regular meetings and summits to foster networking and knowledge sharing
• Access to experienced professionals for mentorship and guidance
• Information on training and continuous education opportunities
These elements combine to create a comprehensive support system that not only helps newcomers gain technical knowledge but also helps them build the professional relationships crucial for long-term success in the field.
Launch
The official launch of the UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network took place on 2nd October at No-Dig Live 2024, marking a significant milestone for the industry. This high-profile event provided an ideal platform to introduce the initiative to a wide audience of industry professionals, both new and experienced.
Leadership and Vision
The UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network is being spearheaded by a team of dedicated professionals who recognise the importance of nurturing new talent in the industry. Silvana Alfieri, the programme lead for the initiative, brings her own experience as a young professional in the trenchless sector to the role, understanding firsthand the challenges and opportunities faced by newcomers.
Silvana emphasises the network’s potential to empower those new to the industry, stating, “I wanted to create a space where those new to the trenchless industry can connect with each other and learn about the innumerable aspects of trenchless technologies.” Her vision for the network includes fostering an environment where newcomers can expand their knowledge, develop essential skills, and build meaningful relationships within the industry.
Industry Support and Endorsement
The launch of the UKSTT New to Trenchless Industry Network has garnered strong support from industry leaders who recognise its potential impact on the sector’s future. Ian Ramsay, Past Chair of UKSTT, underscores the initiative’s alignment with the organisation’s broader mission, stating, “The UKSTT’s mandate is to develop the education and growth within the trenchless industry. By engaging with its new entrants and developing enthusiasm, mentoring and passion, we are making a difference and sustaining benefit for the long term.”
This endorsement from key industry figures highlights the collective recognition of the need to invest in and support the next generation of trenchless professionals. It also signals a commitment from established industry leaders to actively participate in mentoring and knowledge-sharing activities, ensuring a smooth transfer of expertise to newcomers.
Looking Ahead: Plans and Expectations
The network promises to offer a comprehensive programme of events, resources, and opportunities designed to support the professional growth of its members.
Some of the key features that participants can look forward to include:
• Bimonthly meetings and summits at UKSTT events, providing regular opportunities for learning and networking
• Connections with experienced professionals, facilitating mentorship and guidance
• Access to information on training and continuous education opportunities, helping members enhance their skills and knowledge
• Social events that allow peers in the industry to connect in a more relaxed setting
These planned activities reflect a holistic approach to supporting new professionals, recognising that success in the trenchless industry requires not only technical knowledge but also strong professional networks and ongoing learning opportunities.
First online meeting
The Network held its first online meeting on the 23 January 2025. Presented by Programme Lead Silvana Alfieri, UKSTT Technical & Education subcommittee Chair Iain Naismith and UKSTT Vice Chair Tim Sargent the meeting started by setting the scene and identifying where the trenchless technology resources, from UKSTT & ISTT, can be found. The sign up from different sectors of the industry was very encouraging, including network owners, manufacturers, contractors and academics, and our next meeting is already being planned.
