Quick-Pig wins UKSTT Award and is nominated for the Utility Weeks Award
The Quick-Pig station from Reinert-Ritz has won an award in the ‘Innovative Technology’ category from the UK Society for Trenchless Technology (UKSTT). On the Isles of Scilly, Quick-Pig enabled trenchless and space-saving maintenance of the sewage rising main, allowing the pipes to be cleaned and maintained efficiently.
‘We are delighted to have won the UKSTT Award,’ says Nico Hindriks, Technical Consultant at Reinert-Ritz, ’the appreciation of an organization that promotes trenchless technology shows us the importance of the topic in Europe.’
In the award-winning project on the remote Isles of Scilly, a private sewage rising mainbwas commissioned 20 years ago and has since been handed over to South West Water. The 63 mm rising main was only a small trickle, so the pipe had to be replaced as quickly as possible.
Not only does the necessary civil engineering work and the subsequent maintenance of such a rising main tie up capacity, but the spatial and structural conditions on the small archipelago are narrow and difficult to access for all the necessary vehicles and equipment, and the surrounding area offers little space for major construction work. South West Water commissioned Glanville Environmental to make the rising main functional again and to be able to maintain the pipeline in future with minimum effort. The search for a technically innovative solution began.
Quick-Pig enables manhole-free installation and simple installation
Quick-Pig is a pigging station that is easy to install. It is installed as a fitting directly in the pipe trench and therefore takes up very little space. The rising main can be easily cleaned using the pigging process. Especially on the health and safety aspects as well. No one has to climb down in a manhole and work can be done easily from street level. A dome is led to just below the top edge of the ground, where the pig can then be used. At a trade fair, the technical consultant met the people responsible at South West Water and Glanville Environmental. Both project partners were quickly convinced by Quick-Pig. Subsequently, five pig launchers were planned.
The beneficial innovations for the sewerage system on the Isles of Scilly also convinced the jury of the award, which honoured the project in the ‘Innovative Technology’ category. The winners were announced by the UKSTT at a gala evening on 2 October.
In addition to its already great success, Quick-Pig was also nominated for a Utility Weeks Award. The award ceremony will take place on 03 December.
