LINING DIVISION LTD (A VORTEX COMPANY) PROVIDING TRENCHLESS INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS IN THE UK

Lining Division LogoLINING DIVISION LTD (A VORTEX COMPANY) PROVIDING TRENCHLESS INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS IN THE UK IN CONJUNCTION WITH VORTEX EUROPE-SUPPLIERS OF NO-DIG REHABILITATION EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS SOLVE MAJOR INFILTRATION ISSUES TO SEWER NETWORK IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND.

Adjacent to the River Thames in Southern England, a network of brick manhole chambers and associated pipework was being inundated with large amounts of groundwater. A total of thirteen chambers, All over 7 meters deep and a 100m section of 300mm diameter sewer pipe was affected causing a lack of storage capacity and an increase in unwanted pumping and treatment costs.

Upon visual inspection, it was clear that a major sealing scheme was needed to restore the sewer network back to normal working order.  Traditional methods and techniques would have involved drastic excavations for the surrounding area.  This strategy would have been prohibitively expensive, time consuming, and very disruptive to the impacted areas.  A cluster of busy roadways and industrial areas further complicated the repair site.

Enter, the Vortex Europe suite of world class, trenchless rehabilitation products.

THE SOLUTION>

Lining Division Ltd/Vortex Europe was selected to provide a trenchless and cost-effective solution to rectify these issues. Firstly, the Lining Division Ltd (LDL) team conducted a visual inspection to identify where the groundwater infiltration was causing the inundation to each of the manhole chambers. Following the visual inspection, the project team drilled through the chamber walls to inject its I & I Guard, a two-part chemical injection grout to close out the incoming water infiltration. Next, QuadPlug a fast setting, cementitious water-stop was applied to seal minor leaks before reprofiling with the Vortex Hyperform, rapid-set, high early strength patching material.  Finally, a coating of GeoKrete geopolymer mortar was applied to form a monolithic, inorganic polymer structure, making it extremely resistant to further infiltration and restoring structural integrity.

Once the manhole chambers were sealed, robotic cutting of some scale and a series of Cured in Place Repairs were installed through the associated pipework providing leak tight sealing and further reduction of groundwater. This project took six weeks to complete and no excavations or any other complications other than traffic management were required.

+ Vortex Product Snapshot

[I & I Guard]:  I & I Guard is a high-density, high-strength, structural, closed-cell, two-part polyurethane grout that stabilizes soil, fills voids and sinkholes created by erosion, relevels concrete slabs, and other various types of geotechnical grouting.

[QuadPlug]:  QuadPlug is a special blend of special cements and admixtures which are designed to instantly stop running water or seepage in all types of concrete and masonry structures.  Recommended for Sewer Pipes and Manholes, Concrete Tanks, Elevator Pits, Cisterns, Basements, Concrete & Masonry Walls.

[Hyperform]:  Hyperform is a one component, rapid setting, high early strength patching material designed for repairing vertical and horizontal concrete and masonry structures.  Recommended for filling large voids in manhole walls, reconstructing inverts, concrete repair and patching, and pipe repair.

[GeoKrete]:  The GeoKrete family of products is formulated to provide corrosion resistant protection in a high hydrogen sulfide environment, restore structural integrity and eliminate the infiltration of groundwater on deteriorated structures.  Recommended for structural restoration of large diameter pipes, culverts and tunnels, including raw, storm and wastewater, consisting of metal, concrete, stone, masonry and others.  Other structures such as manholes, wet-walls, and treatment plant structures also benefit from the superior strength and corrosion resistant properties of this advances geopolymer material.

IMPACT>

  • All 13 manhole chambers were restored to full functionality with a design life of 50+ years.
  • Because all of the work was completely trenchless, the adjacent roadways, businesses and residential areas were able to continue normal operations without any disruption throughout the project.
  • All parties involved were amazed and impressed with the results given the infiltration challenges.
  • Major cost savings in the reduction of pumping and treatment of unwanted groundwater.
  • First major project of this type in the UK showing that Vortex Companies products will perform in the most extreme of cases. (One particular chamber here was estimated to have groundwater inflow of around 40 litres a second.)
