API brings the longest range ROV crawler camera system to the UK

API brings the longest range ROV crawler camera system to the UK API brings the longest range ROV crawler camera system to the UK & successfully completes its pilot project for United Utilities!

API is working with partners from Norway to offer long range depressurised water pipeline inspections up to a range of 2500 metres from a single entry point.

The system unlike conventional crawler cameras includes a small diameter, lightweight umbilical cable, inline battery pack and 6-wheel drive system.

The first project has already been awarded and completed this week, working with United Utilities on a 1000mm concrete outfall line. The pipeline runs a total length of 1.5 km API Team & partners on sitewith previous companies limited to a survey range of 500 metres only.

The benefit of using this type of system is it significantly reduces the need for multiple excavations to insert a camera to survey lines, also on some locations there isn’t even the option to dig trial holes due to ground structure, incline and properties built above.

Camera entry points

The ROV system is designed to enter a pipeline via a wide range of entry points, the systems size can be altered by changing the wheels to determine cameras overall dimensions.

The ROV system is fully battery operated, includes a 4K pan/tilt/zoom camera with sonde for pipe tracing, and enters the pipeline via a range of openings.

Applications to the water sector

• Depressurised water pipe condition assessment tool
• Pipe material, joint and lining validation Crawler system with battery pack weighs 35 KG
• Location of pipe defects, blockages and buried valves
• Investigate the source of dirty water prior to customer complaints (DWI)
• Asset management budget validation device
• Identify illegal connections on both water and drainage mains (NRW)
• Long range Hydro/aqueduct inspections
• Mains tracing, line and level

Survey results

The team successfully surveyed the entire pipeline in a single day to identify pipe condition, trace fittings, in this case an unknown 90-degree bend, and also pipe break ins where openings had been made from external sources.

API Representative Fabio Orlandi:

API Specialises in under pressure water pipe inspections using PIPA Technology, however due to increased demand overseas API is also networking with other specialist companies to offer a wider range of services others cannot offer in the UK.

I never like to turn work down, in fact I strive in sourcing or creating a tool to support our wide client base on all projects, then in turn we can add another system to the API tool box!
Regarding PIPA, we have developed the widest range of pressurised pipe inspection products commercially available in the world, and have worked with the majority of the UK water utility companies and a wide range of clients overseas.
