M606 Mill Carr Culvert Remediation

Corrosion of a twin pipe culvert under the M606 in West Yorkshire compromised its structural integrity, but due to the location, length, construction and configuration, several contractors had declined National Highways’ attempts to renovate the ‘significant structure’ over the years, having found it too difficult to do.

A collaborative approach by highway civil engineers Carnell and trenchless specialists OnSite brought engineering solutions through ECI. This problem-solving approach continued during the construction phase, to successfully remediate the 160m long culvert.

The scheme received praise from the local community and client who requested the same team tackle their next challenging culvert project.

Millennium Main

A Thames Water large-diameter trunk main running from Nunhead Reservoir to Deptford is a critical asset Thames network, supplying water to the rapidly developing Greenwich Peninsula. Sections of the pipeline, originally constructed using glass-reinforced plastic, had suffered repeated failures and exhibited extensive deterioration, including severe blistering. These issues raised serious concerns about the pipeline’s structural integrity and compliance with Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) standards. Thames Water engaged Mgroup Water to lead a comprehensive programme of site investigations and develop a cost-effective rehabilitation strategy. This culminated in the successful delivery of a £21 million project to restore the trunk main’s reliability and extend its operational life.
