SMARTester Open Day Highlights Industry Collaboration Around New UP1b Edition 4 Procedures
SMARTester welcomed representatives from across the UK smart metering industry to its headquarters in Bradford on Avon earlier this week for a dedicated Open Day focused on the latest developments in gas tightness testing and smart meter installation best practice.
The event brought together delegates from leading energy suppliers, network operators and metering organisations to discuss the implementation of UP1b Edition 4 procedures, explore new technology solutions and share industry insights.
A key focus of the day was the introduction of the updated UP1b Edition 4 procedures and their impact on gas tightness testing. Attendees received detailed presentations and live demonstrations showcasing how SMARTester is supporting operatives and organisations in adapting to the procedural changes.
The event also featured demonstrations of TestSense, the recently launched free tool within the SMARTester app. Developed in collaboration with EDF, E.ON and Octopus Energy, TestSense is
the first feature released in direct response to the new UP1b Edition 4 procedures. The tool enables meter operatives to quickly and accurately calculate the volume of pipework and fittings, helping them determine permissible drops with greater confidence and consistency.
Throughout the day, delegates participated in breakout discussions focused on the practical implementation of the new procedures, sharing experiences, challenges and opportunities from across the industry. These collaborative sessions provided valuable feedback and highlighted the importance of continued engagement as organisations transition to the updated standards.
Alongside the technical programme, attendees took part in the SMARTester Box Building Challenge, a light-hearted competition designed to encourage networking and team engagement. Colin Archer from MPAAS secured victory by assembling a SMARTester box in just 11.5 seconds.
The Open Day concluded with a networking lunch, providing further opportunities for attendees to exchange ideas and discuss industry developments with SMARTester representatives and peers.
Representatives from E.ON, SGN, EDF, OVO, Octopus Energy, MPAAS, Energise Energy, Momentum and SMS Energy attended the event.
Commenting on the success of the Open Day, Laura Jefferies Head of SMARTester said:
“The introduction of UP1b Edition 4 represents an important step forward for the industry. Bringing suppliers, network operators and metering organisations together created a great opportunity to share knowledge, talk through some of the practical challenges, and make sure operatives have the tools and support they need on the ground. A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussions — we truly value your input.”
SMARTester continues to work closely with industry stakeholders to develop practical solutions that support safe, compliant and efficient smart meter installations across the UK.
