New Installation – Horizontal Directional Drilling is Sponsored by:
The Finalists are:
Gmac Utilities Ltd, AG Wilson Civil Engineering, Caledonia Water Alliance ( A Morrison Utility service and AECOM JV for Scottish Water) & Howland Associates
Gmac Utilities Ltd undertook the installation of twin 355mm sleeves for an under-track crossing in the picturesque western Highland town of Oban for AG Wilson Civil Engineering Ltd. Not only was the terrain difficult, but exceptional hard ground conditions with high iron content created additional challenges which Gmac Utilities overcame. Working from the confines of a small working area within the grounds of a local school created plenty of community interest and subsequent engagement with the school pupils.
Caledonian Water Project Manager Terrry O’Bryne quoted about the scheme “Pretty much achieved here what others considered impossible. It was border line or just over it. Not many understood the complexities and risk involved, there was a few sleepless nights for myself (or sleepless days and nights as it was day shift back-to-back shift nightshift for me !)”.

Little Barford to Eaton Socon – A cable route that, ‘could not be built’
Peter McCormack & Sons – McCormack Drilling was commissioned by Kier, working on behalf of their client UKPN, to undertake the design & installation of the HDD sections for the Little Barford 132kV Switchgear Replacement Project.
The overall works required the replacement of the Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) with new Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) at Little Barford and to establish 3rd Super Grid Transformer (SGT) connection with a single 132kV cable route between Little Barford and Eaton Socon. With careful planning and delivery, the project was successfully energised in October 2021.
OnSite Pipelines, JMH Drilling, Amey Consulting & South Staffs Water
Roxane UK Ltd Seedy Mill Twin Pipeline & HS2 Diversion
Roxane Ltd via South Staffs Water commissioned OnSite to design and build a new twin 180mm clean water pipeline 4.5km from Seedy Mill WTW to their bottling plant at Wood End Lane, Lichfield crossing both WCML, A515 and HS2, with extensive use of HDD as preferred installation method.
OnSite had to engage and collaborate with a multitude of stakeholders including a very demanding French owned water bottling company
A final complex drill of 5 pipes through a single 860mm bore up to of 340m at depths of 10m was added to the scope once HS2 had confirmed their route
